How to start an online business from home that’s right for you!

As a straight talker I’ll happily share that, most of the time when someone mentions starting an online business there’s a catch, they’re trying to sell you something, or get you to sign up to their program, be it a coaching program or a network marketing program where you sell other people’s products and the list goes on.

I’ve been to lots of seminars and events where you have a coach saying the best online business is to become a coach and of course they are selling coaching courses. Have a look around YouTube and you’ll find lots of people talking about starting an Amazon FBA business and it just so happens that they have a course you can purchase.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of this, I have written and published a book and I am selling a course, but I won’t tell you that it’s the only way to become successful in business. My DIY PR course is about adding skills to your amour and my book is about taking your current skills and using them to consultant – where you can work from home and choose the hours you work, like I do.

The Truth

The truth of the matter is for you to have a successful online business that you enjoy, it needs to be something you are passionate about. An online business that you will happily, and willingly commit to, and show up for on a daily basis. There is no quick scheme or magic pill to take that will result in you waking up to a thriving business and your bank account overflowing with money. So really you have to look within and be honest with yourself. Why? Because as corny as it may sound, YOU my friend have the answers inside, only you can identify what interests you, your passions, the thing you’ve always wanted to do but been to scared, or the what you enjoy doing that doesn’t feel like work for you.

Remember that you’ll be the one putting in all the work so it needs to be something that genuinely interests and excites you and of course has appeal to your target audience so you can make some money and have financial freedom.

Have a word with yourself – mindset matters

I watched a program yesterday and one of the scenes really hit home, the protagonist was faced with a challenging situation and was having very unhelpful and rather funny conversations with herself. I thought to myself…hmm I do that, we all do that, but as it was a comedy, we could hear her thoughts. I’m grateful it isn’t like that in real life, can you imagine what it would be like if we could hear everyones thoughts..a hilarious nightmare!

The conversation within

But I digress, in all honesty the conversations we have with ourselves can literally make or break us. How many times do you have negative thoughts, thinking you’re not good enough for this, that or the third. I’m no different, we all have fears and self-limiting beliefs. It may come from a lack of confidence or a lack of support or something entirely different. No matter how these limiting thoughts came about we can and need to give then the boot! Yep they need to hit the road Jack!

Yes, sometimes you have to tell that voice in your head telling you that you can’t do it to shut up, not sure how, listen to Stormzy or watch MR T from the A-Team…if you can find it. The truth is that we tend to have more negative thoughts that positive, which means we have to work harder to keep ourselves motivated.

If you’re a business owner or entrepreneur you can surely relate. When you are starting or running a business you are juggling lots of things at the same time. With so much to do its not uncommon to feel overwhelmed at times, that voice may say ‘what are you doing, you’ve left your job chasing your dreams but you’re an idiot you won’t make it’. Some people listen to this voice and give up, but if you really want to achieve your dreams, (which you can) you’ll have to be prepared for that internal battle which is one of the hardest. I came across this image the other day and I thought it was spot on!

To be successful and to achieve your dreams you constantly and consistently have to be having a word with yourself! That means doing your daily affirmations and reminding yourself of your strengths as well as focusing on what you are grateful for. I heard a motivational speaker say what you focus on expands…where is your focus and do you need to adjust your lens?

Escaping the rat race is a desire for many, research published last month revealed that more than half of all UK employees are unhappy in the work place. Many can relate to being unhappy in their job, the realities of spending more time at work then we do with our loved ones, and with the UK retirement age set to increase in the coming years, it doesn’t exactly incite excitement in the average person.

So, how happy are those that have escaped the 9-5? A study last month of 5,000 workers concluded that self-employed people are more successful in their careers and felt happier in their job. Statistics show that self-employment is on the rise, if you are thinking about a way to exit the workplace here are 10 routes to explore:

Mind matters

Work on your mind-set, if you’re serious about escaping the 9-5 tied to your desk culture, it’s vital to take time to work on your confidence and resilience. Working for yourself is empowering and rewarding but also challenging, you have to keep yourself motivated throughout it all. Positive can-do attitude alongside action is imperative.

Consider becoming a consultant

As a consultant you are paid to share your professional knowledge with clients to help them achieve their goals. Anyone can consultant as long as they have the necessary skills set. It’s a great way to escape and to earn well whilst you do so – this is the route I opted for.

Build your side hustle

What do you do in your spare time? Whether you make jewellery, paint, do people’s hair or make- up, there could be an audience waiting for you. With hard graft and commitment, you can build on this and eventually turn your side hustle into a full-time gig and quit your day job.

Start an online business

There are lots of people making money online. If you have an eye for spotting bargains aimed at a niche markets, why not explore an e-commerce business, or create a website to review products. Do some research and you’ll see the potential in this area is limitless.

Online Selling

Setting up as a seller on eBay or Amazon platforms can be extremely lucrative, and whilst it is becoming more popular, with the right product and marketing you can be on your way to leaving your workplace.

YouTube

Do you have a great personality that translates on screen? Why not look at becoming a Youtuber. With passion, hard work and dedication it’s proven to be a rewarding and lucrative route for many.

Blog

If you do it right, target the right niche, remain consistent, it’s a great way to build a passive income that can over take your salary.

Teaching Online

There are always people looking to learn new skills, so why not share your knowledge and get paid for it.

Writing Books

Everyone has a story in them, so why not consider penning a book or creating an audio book.

Freelance

Websites like Upwork and Fivver, allow you to sell your services, such as copy writing, graphic design and social media management. You don’t even need a website so can start earning ASAP.
